African Union Backs Lango,Acholi and Teso War Claimants

NORTHERN UGANDA : 29TH JULY 2026 The long-running quest for compensation by war victims from the Lango,Acholi and Teso sub-regions has received a significant boost after the African Union (AU) reportedly agreed to support their campaign for justice and compensation against the Government of Uganda.
The development was announced by the Chief Executive Officer of the Northern War Claimants,Moses Ogwang Adonyo,shortly after returning from Addis Ababa,Ethiopia, where he held meetings with officials linked to the African Union.
According to Adonyo,the African Union has accepted to support the claimants' pursuit of justice over property and livelihoods allegedly lost during the insurgencies that devastated northern and eastern Uganda decades ago.
He said his visit to Ethiopia on July 20, 2026, was aimed at engaging officials on legal avenues after,according to the claimants, the Ugandan government failed to fully compensate victims despite years of petitions and negotiations.
Adonyo revealed that the claimants are now preparing for the next legal stage,saying they are awaiting official communication from the African Union that will guide the filing and handling of their case. He further accused the Ugandan government of failing to honour compensation commitments to victims from Lango,Acholi and Teso. "The African Union has shown commitment to ensuring that the voices of war victims are heard and that justice is pursued through the appropriate legal channels," Adonyo said. Meanwhile,Lango War Claimants Chairperson Saidi Ogwang welcomed the reported support,describing it as a major source of hope for thousands of families who lost livestock,property and livelihoods during the conflict.
He said the intervention by the continental body has renewed confidence among victims who have spent years demanding compensation. Adonyo also disclosed that within the next two weeks,he is expected to travel to Kenya for further consultations with legal partners as preparations intensify for legal action against the Government of Uganda.
The latest development marks another chapter in the decades-long campaign by northern Uganda war victims,who continue to seek compensation and accountability for losses suffered during years of armed conflict.
