Lango Parliamentary Group in Turmoil as Susan Abeja Quits
In an exclusive interview,Abeja said her appointment as Parliamentary Commissioner requires her to serve all Ugandans impartially rather than remain aligned with a regional parliamentary bloc.

LANGO 27/JULY 2026 : The Lango Parliamentary Group has been plunged into fresh political turmoil after Otuke District Woman MP and Parliamentary Commissioner Hon.
Susan Abeja announced her decision to quit the regional caucus, citing weak leadership,imbalance in decision-making,and the demands of her national office. In an exclusive interview,Abeja said her appointment as Parliamentary Commissioner requires her to serve all Ugandans impartially rather than remain aligned with a regional parliamentary bloc. "I hope to leave the Lango Parliamentary Group because of weak leadership and imbalance in decision-making within some members of the group," Abeja said. She explained that the Parliamentary Commission is a national institution whose responsibilities extend beyond regional interests.
"As Commissioner in Parliament,I do not serve only Lango but all regions of Uganda. My responsibilities now cut across the whole country,and I cannot confine myself to a single regional bloc.
" Her announcement immediately drew criticism from the leadership of the Lango Parliamentary Group. The Chairperson LPG and Oyam South MP, Hon.Patrick Ogwang Obura,dismissed Abeja's reasons,arguing that she had already distanced herself from the group's activities long before becoming Parliamentary Commissioner.
According to Ogwang Obura,Abeja did not participate in the election of the current caucus leadership and had largely remained inactive during the 12th Parliament.
"Abeja did not participate in the election of the Lango Parliamentary Group leaders.The 12th Parliament was full of conflict and disunity,making her not admire staying in the group," Ogwang Obura said.
He insisted that disagreements within the caucus should be resolved through dialogue instead of resignation. "As Chairperson of the Lango Parliamentary Group,we believe that if any MP has concerns within the group,they should use amicable ways of resolving them rather than quitting."Ogwang Obura expressed. Ogwang Obura also expressed disappointment that one of Lango's senior legislators had chosen to leave instead of mentoring newly elected MPs. "Abeja and other senior MPs should guide the new MPs in Parliament.If she leaves the group,that means she is not demonstrating unity and love for Lango.
" He further revealed that the caucus had not yet received a formal resignation letter from Abeja. We are waiting for her to make it formal to the Lango Parliamentary Group.
The controversy deepened after Otuke East County MP Hon.Julius Acon Bua strongly condemned Abeja's decision,describing it as a betrayal of the unity that has traditionally defined Lango's parliamentary representation.
Acon Bua said he had supported Abeja during her parliamentary campaign and was disappointed that she had chosen to distance herself from the regional caucus after attaining the influential position of Parliamentary Commissioner.
He further accused Abeja of allowing her new office to distance her from the people and leaders of Lango,arguing that the appointment should have strengthened rather than weakened her commitment to the region.
Despite the criticism,Abeja maintained that her decision is final,insisting that her constitutional responsibilities require neutrality.
According to the Lango Sub-region seed allocation schedule, a total of 487,000 kilogrammes of seeds have been distributed across the region.
Oyam District received the largest allocation of 129,500 kilogrammes, followed by Lira City with 83,500 kilogrammes, Lira District with 79,000 kilogrammes, Apac with 49,000 kilogrammes, Dokolo with 41,000 kilogrammes, Kole and Alebtong with 35,000 kilogrammes each, Amolatar and Kwania with 15,000 kilogrammes each, while Otuke received 5,000 kilogrammes. The overall distribution comprises 405,000 kilogrammes of maize, 1,000 kilogrammes of sesame, 41,000 kilogrammes of soyabean, 5,000 kilogrammes of beans, 30,000 kilogrammes of rice, 4,000 kilogrammes of groundnuts and 1,000 kilogrammes of sunflower seeds. Some residents are particularly questioning the role of Hon.Susan Abeja,alleging that she failed to facilitate or oversee the distribution of the seeds to farmers in the area.
The residents say accountability is necessary to establish whether the allocated seeds were fully distributed and reached the intended farmers. The concerns come at a time when agricultural inputs remain a key component of government efforts to improve household incomes and food production across the Lango Sub-region.
