LIRA — Parents in Northern and Eastern Uganda will no longer have to endure the grueling financial and emotional burden of long-distance referrals for specialized children's surgeries.

This follows a massive UGX 500 million donation of modern pediatric theatre equipment to Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH), delivered by UK-based charity Kids Operating Room (Kids OR).

The specialized consignment—which includes advanced anesthesia machines, recovery monitors, operating beds, and theater trolleys—is set to fully operationalize a state-of-the-art children’s surgical ward at the facility. Medical tech experts and biomedical engineers are already on-site, with the theater expected to be fully functional by early June 2026.

According to LRRH Pediatric Surgeon, Dr. Charles Newton Odongo, the upgrade is a major milestone for regional healthcare equity. He emphasized that having a fully equipped, specialized facility locally will drastically cut down emergency travel times and prohibitive referral costs for vulnerable families.

The intervention addresses a critical gap in the region's healthcare system. Children currently account for a staggering 25 percent of the 10,000 surgeries performed annually at LRRH. While the hospital’s dedicated pediatric unit has successfully handled over 3,000 complex surgeries since its inception, the new infrastructure is expected to drastically elevate patient safety and improve surgical outcomes.

Receiving the equipment, the Acting Hospital Director, Dr. Andrew Odur, hailed the partnership as a timely intervention for a hospital experiencing rapid growth.

“This support has come at the right time when the hospital is expanding and improving pediatric surgical care," Dr. Odur said. "Once installed, the equipment will greatly enhance patient safety and provide a more conducive working environment for our surgeons and healthcare teams.”

Beyond immediate patient care, hospital management is already looking toward the future. Dr. Odongo revealed plans to leverage this new infrastructure to establish specialized fellowship training programs in pediatric surgery—a move aimed at training the next generation of child-health specialists right within the region.
