LANGO:The National Drug Authority (NDA) has concluded a major targeted enforcement operation in the Northern Region, shutting down over 65 illegal drug outlets and impounding medicines valued at more than UGX 37 million. The week-long operation, which targeted Lira City, Amolatar, Oyam, and Lira districts, aimed to root out unlicensed pharmaceutical facilities that pose a serious risk to public health.
According to the NDA, the closed outlets were operating in unsanitary and unlicensed premises and were employing unqualified personnel to handle and dispense medicines. This practice often leads to the distribution of substandard or poor-quality drugs, irrational drug use, treatment failure, and contributes to the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance. Arrests and Prosecution During the crackdown, one individual, Lakot Florence, was arrested and taken to Lira Court for carrying on the business of a pharmacist without a valid license.
The Authority is also actively pursuing two other suspects, Bua Godfrey and Aporu Joel, who are currently on the run. The pair are accused of operating illegal drug stores without licenses and will be prosecuted once apprehended. Compliance and Public Warning The NDA has directed all operators whose drugs were impounded to visit the Northern Regional Office in Lira City for compliance guidance. Furthermore, a stern warning has been issued to all unlicensed premises to cease operations immediately until all licensing requirements are fulfilled.
Speaking on the operation, the NDA Public Relations Manager, Abiaz Rwamwiri, emphasized the Authority’s commitment to public safety. “This operation is in line with NDA's mandate to protect and promote public health through the effective regulation of human and animal medicines. We cannot stand by while unqualified personnel endanger the lives of unsuspecting citizens,” Mr. Rwamwiri stated.
2026 Licensing Cycle In a related reminder, the NDA has announced that the 2026 licensing cycle for both renewals and new licenses has officially started. All operators of drug shops and pharmacies are urged to regularize their status to avoid future disruptions. Appeal to the Public The NDA is urging the public to only buy drugs from licensed pharmacies and drug shops. Citizens are encouraged to play an active role in safeguarding their communities by reporting any suspected drug-related crimes via the NDA toll-free line 0800 101 999 or WhatsApp line 0740 002 070. Your safety is our priority. Safe Drugs Save Lives.
