LIRA CITY Police in Lira City West Division are investigating a case of suspected murder by mob that claimed the life of a 25-year-old man. The deceased has been identified as Alany Gerald, 25, a self-employed resident of Obutuwelo A Cell, Ojwina Ward C, Lira City West Division.
According to preliminary police findings, the incident happened in the night of August 24, 2026, at unknown hours. It is alleged that Alany and others still at large broke into a yet-to-be-identified home in Obutuwelo A Cell while occupants were sleeping and stole household items.
Police say the group allegedly returned to the same home to steal more items, but Alany was arrested by the homeowner while his colleagues escaped.
He was beaten by the family members before other community members joined and killed him instantly.
His body was later dumped in the middle of the road. The case was reported to police by a concerned citizen.
A team of officers led by the OC Station, with SOCO and homicide detectives, responded to the scene, processed and documented it, and recorded relevant statements.
The body was retrieved and conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examination.
No arrest has been made yet, but efforts to apprehend suspects are ongoing.
Police have condemned the act of mob justice, appealing to the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands and instead apprehend suspects and hand them over for investigation and prosecution.
