ALEBTONG DISTRICT -Residents and local leaders in Awei Sub-county,Alebtong District, have raised concerns over the collection of stamps from the current Local Council one chairpersons and their transfer to the district office before the newly elected LC1 leaders are sworn into office.
The residents say the move is creating difficulties in accessing essential local government services,as the current LC1 chairpersons are still legally in charge of their respective villages until the new leaders officially assume office.
Daniel Oloa a resident of Oyengo-Lwedo “B” cell in Awei Sub-county,said the decision to collect the stamps from the current LC1 chairpersons has made it difficult for residents to access services that require official local council documentation. Oloa said some residents are being forced to travel to the district offices to obtain stamps, despite the long distances and transport costs involved. He urged the government and district authorities to return the stamps to the current LC1 chairpersons so that they can continue serving residents effectively until the newly elected leaders are officially sworn in.
One of the Awei Sub-county LC1 Chairperson who spoke on condition of anonymity, warned that keeping the stamps at the district could create unnecessary disputes and insecurities in the communities. Sam Oyena Obonyo, the LC3 Chairperson of Awei Sub county said collecting the stamps from newly elected LC1 Chairperson could undermine the smooth delivery of local government services.
Oyena Obonyo appealed to Alebtong District authorities to reconsider the decision and ensure that residents continue receiving services without unnecessary delays. Meanwhile,Ambrose Ongom Ongom the LC5 chairperson of Alebtong District, said the district has already written to the Town Clerk and the sub counties chief in Alebtong to take the oath of the LC1 Chairperson before 28/8/26. Ongom Ongom said the concern is not limited to Awei Sub-county,but could also affect other areas in Alebtong district.
He called on local leaders to report any challenges arising from their areas so that they can addressed it promptly. The concerns come as communities prepare for the transition to the newly elected Local Council one leadership following the recent local council one elections held on 28/7/26.
