Lango Agro Dealers Declare War on Counterfeit Farm Inputs

LIRA CITY LANGO - Agro input dealers across the Lango Sub-region have resolved to intensify the fight against counterfeit agricultural inputs, saying the trade is destroying genuine businesses and pushing farmers into losses.

Speaking during the meeting, Susan Acen, Chairperson of Agro Input Dealers in Lango Sub-region and Director of Jalson Farmers Uganda Limited, said dealers agreed on several measures to protect farmers from fake seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other products. "We will begin conducting joint inspections in markets across Lango alongside the police to identify and apprehend individuals selling counterfeit agro inputs," Acen said.
She announced that Richard Odongo has been assigned to coordinate inspections in all districts within Lango to ensure only licensed agro input dealers are allowed to operate.
Acen also appealed to District Agricultural Officers to strengthen collaboration with licensed dealers, noting that some suspects arrested for selling fake inputs are reportedly released without facing legal action.
"Counterfeit products are negatively affecting genuine businesses and exposing farmers to huge financial losses due to poor crop yields," she added.

Easy Bash Machar, Vice Chairperson of the association and Director of Shalak Agro Input Along Olwol road Lira City, said enforcement operations will target only those selling counterfeit or unlicensed agricultural inputs.
He urged government to prioritize protecting Uganda’s agricultural sector.
"Fake farm inputs are undermining agricultural production and threatening farmers' livelihoods," Machar warned.

Meanwhile, the Lira City Agricultural Officer, Denis Ocaya, assured dealers of his office’s support in the crackdown.
Ocaya warned that anyone found selling agricultural inputs without authorization or dealing in counterfeit products will face prosecution.

He also encouraged licensed dealers to continue reporting suspected illegal traders to relevant authorities to safeguard farmers and improve productivity in the Lango Sub-region.
