LIRA CITY - All National Resistance Movement (NRM) Ward Chairpersons in Lira City East Division have launched a new cooperative society aimed at promoting unity,economic empowerment and collective development among party leaders. 

The newly established NRM Ward Chairpersons Lira City East Cooperative Society brings together NRM Ward Chairpersons from across Lira City East Division. Speaking during the launch,the NRM Chairperson for Angwet-Angwet Ward, Tonny Obwol,who also leads the association of NRM Ward Chairpersons in Lira City East Division,said the cooperative was established to strengthen cooperation and improve the economic welfare of the party leaders. Obwol said the initiative was intended to bring all NRM Ward Chairpersons together and encourage them to engage in productive activities rather than depending on financial support from leaders currently holding political offices. 

He added that the cooperative would also help ensure that government opportunities and programmes reach the grassroots leaders and are effectively utilised to improve their livelihoods.

 “The cooperative is intended to unite us and encourage all NRM Ward Chairpersons to work hard for their own development.We should not always depend on money from leaders who are currently in office when we can collectively engage in productive economic activities,”Obwol said.

Meanwhile,Bonny Okello,the NRM Chairperson for Ireda West Ward and a secretary of the cooperative's, said unity among NRM Ward Chairpersons was crucial in strengthening their collective voice and influence within the leadership of Lira City East Division.

Okello said the cooperative would provide a platform through which the Chairpersons could work together and support one another in economic and development activities. 

He added that individuals interested in joining the cooperative would be required to pay a membership fee of Shs10,000. On his part,Aryam Robert Dalton,the Councillor for Atego Ward and NRM Chairperson for Atego Ward,said members would follow all the necessary procedures to ensure that the cooperative operates legally and works closely with the government.

Dalton said the government needs leaders and citizens who actively participate in development rather than individuals who remain dependent on handouts.

The leaders further announced that all meetings and activities of the NRM Ward Chairpersons Lira City East Cooperative Society would be held at the NRM Party offices in Lira City East Division.

The establishment of the cooperative is expected to strengthen unity,promote self-reliance and create new economic opportunities for NRM Ward Chairpersons across Lira City East Division.
