Man Found Dead in Awiodyek Swamp, Police Investigate Murder by Assault

Preliminary findings indicate that on 22nd August at around 8:00pm, Ongenyo parked his motorcycle at home and left on foot for the nearby trading centre but never returned. His relatives searched for him the next day in vain.

LIRA CITY Man Found Dead in Awiodyek Swamp, Police Investigate Murder by Assault Police in Lira District are investigating a suspected case of murder by assault that occurred on 22nd August 2026 at Awiodyek swamp in Awiodyek B Village, Awiodyek Parish, Awiodyek Sub-County. The case was formally registered on 25th August 2026 at 11:58am by Okello Walter, 26, from the same village. The deceased has been identified as Ongenyo Tonny, 44, a resident of the same area. Preliminary findings indicate that on 22nd August at around 8:00pm, Ongenyo parked his motorcycle at home and left on foot for the nearby trading centre but never returned. His relatives searched for him the next day in vain. On 25th August, his biological son reported a disappearance case at Wiodyek Sub-County Police Station.

Later that day at around 1:00pm, while taking cows for water at Awiodyek swamp with his brother, they noticed a foul smell and discovered their father's body lying naked and decomposing, with his short and trouseron his face and his shirt on nearby grass. Police from Wiodyek Sub-County and Lira District CPS led by OC CID visited and documented the scene. Statements have been recorded from witnesses and the body has been conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending postmortem. 

No arrest has been made yet, but intelligence is on the ground to identify and arrest suspects. Police have described the incident as unfortunate and called for calm, urging community members to seek peaceful means of resolving conflicts rather than taking the law into their own hands.
