Police in Lira City West Division are investigating a suspected suicide by hanging involving a 15-year-old pupil in Ongica “A” Cell, Barapwo Ward, Lira City West Division.

According to North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the incident was reported at Anai Police Post on May 17, 2026, at around 10:30am by LC1 Chairman Amute Dickens, 56.

The deceased has been identified as Odongo Eric, a resident of Ongica “A” Cell and a pupil aged 15 years.

It is alleged that on the evening of May 16, 2026, the deceased returned home from school and later slept in his room together with his stepbrother, Opio Darius. The following morning at about 8:00am, Opio Darius and other siblings reportedly left for church prayers, leaving Odongo Eric at home after he declined to accompany them.

Police have urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid speculation, and refrain from spreading unverified information that could cause further distress to the bereaved family and the community. The public has also been encouraged to strengthen family communication, offer psychosocial support to children and young people, and promptly report signs of emotional distress to relevant authorities, local leaders, or health professionals for timely intervention.

According to preliminary reports, Opio Darius returned home at about 10:10am and allegedly found Odongo Eric hanging inside the house. He immediately informed their uncle, Otiti Jimmy, who later alerted the LC1 Chairman before police were notified.

A case file was opened and later transferred to Lira City West Police Station for further investigations. A team led by D/AIP Olwedo Francis, together with Scene of Crime Officers, visited and documented the scene.

Police say a note was reportedly recovered from the deceased’s pocket indicating that he was “tired of mistreatment.” The body was conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

Police have since arrested the deceased’s father, Odongo Walter, 41, and stepmother, Akullu Harriet, 38, to assist with ongoing investigations.

SP Patrick Jimmy Okema says investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
