Committee on Govt Assurance Pressures Works Ministry to Deliver on Bridge Pledges
The Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation has asked the Ministry of Works and Transport to explain delays in constructing over 30 pledged bridges on national roads.

PARLIAMENT – The Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation has demanded an explanation from the Ministry of Works and Transport over delays in fulfilling government’s pledge to construct over 30 bridges on national roads. Parliament’s Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation chaired by Hon. Anna Adeke is seeking answers from the Ministry of Works over delayed bridge projects. The committee, Chaired by Deputy Chairperson Hon. Anna Adeke, wants the Ministry to clarify what caused the delays and to provide a clear roadmap to ensure that all government commitments on bridges and road infrastructure are fully implemented.
During the session, on Monday 10th August 2026 Hon. Robert Ssewagudde questioned why delays in construction works during the 2021/2022 financial year were attributed to COVID-19 and the lockdown.
He noted that essential workers and critical services were allowed to operate during the same period under established Standard Operating Procedures, and therefore the excuse does not hold. “Why were bridges and roads exempted when other critical services continued?” Hon. Ssewagudde asked.
Hon.Adeke said the committee’s role is to ensure that government pledges made to the public are honoured and that taxpayers’ money delivers visible results.
The Ministry of Works and Transport is expected to appear before the committee with a detailed report on the status of each of the pledged bridge projects, reasons for the delays, and timelines for completion.
The committee warned that failure to implement the pledges undermines public trust in government and delays economic development in affected areas.
