Akii- Bua Construction reaches 81.5% Completion ahead of AFCON 2027.

LIRA CITY -The Construction works at the Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira City have reached 81.5% completion, according to the Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang. Minister Ogwang revealed this while inspecting the ongoing construction works undertaken by SAMCO, an Egyptian-based construction company
He noted that the project is expected to be completed by December 2026, with the completed facility to be handed over to the government on January 2, 2027, ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
"The government is working together with SAMCO to ensure that the construction of Akii-Bua Stadium is completed as quickly as possible so that it can be ready to host AFCON 2027," Ogwang said.
The Minister added that construction of other sports facilities, including areas for volleyball, handball, and netball, is progressing well, with no major challenges reported so far.
Meanwhile, Lira City Mayor, Sam Atul, described the progress as encouraging but raised concerns over the slow pace of works on sports facilities at Lira University, noting that they require more attention.
The Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Hon. Sam Engola, said the government, under the leadership of H.E President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, remains committed to ensuring that roads around the stadium are completed and the facility is fully prepared to host AFCON 2027 matches.
The development of Akii-Bua Stadium is seen as a major boost to sports infrastructure in northern Uganda and is expected to provide Lira City with a modern facility capable of hosting major national and international sporting events.
