Shakira Among Wins NRM Flag for Lira District Woman Council Chairperson.
The election,which was conducted on Friday, August 21,2026,attracted several candidates seeking to represent the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the upcoming district-wide elections.

LIRA DISTRICT - Shakira Among has emerged as the NRM flag bearer for the Lira District Woman Council Chairperson seat after winning the party’s internal elections held today.
The election,which was conducted on Friday, August 21,2026,attracted several candidates seeking to represent the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the upcoming district-wide elections.
Speaking after the conclusion of the exercise,Lira District NRM Registrar Moses Okello said the election was successfully completed,with three candidates remaining in contention for the Woman Council Chairperson position.
Okello identified the candidates as Shakira Among as the daughter to Lira District Woman Member of Parliament Linda Agness Auma,Lucy Akoli and Nakembo Lyida.
According to Okello,Nakembo Lyida had polled three votes,while Lucy Akoli stepped out of the contest.Shakira Among subsequently secured six votes out of the 12 votes making her the NRM flag bearer for the position.
Other candidates who had expressed interest included Dorcus Amongi,who contested for treasurer,Judith Aol for secretary publicity and Salume Auma for vice chairperson.
However,Okello said none of the other positions attracted competition.
Okello commended Lira District NRM leaders,including the district registrar,the party chairperson,Members of Parliament for Erute North and Erute South,the Lira District Woman MP and other party leaders, for their efforts to ensure that NRM members participated in the electoral process from the grassroots to the district level.
In her remarks after being declared the flag bearer,Shakira Among said women in Lira District had placed their confidence in her because of what she described as her proven commitment to the welfare and development of women.
Among pledged to work hard to ensure that women benefit from development programmes and promised to identify and address weaknesses within the women’s leadership structures.
She said she would focus on ensuring that women in the district are empowered and that gaps affecting their participation in development are addressed.
The final district election for the Woman Council Chairperson is scheduled for August 28,2026,while the national election for the Women’s Council leadership is expected to take place on September 2,2026.
