OTUKE - 23/JULY 2026  :Police in Otuke District have arrested seven National Resistance Movement (NRM) sub-county and town council chairpersons over allegations of mismanaging funds that the party released to facilitate the election of NRM LC Chairpersons and Women Council leaders.

The arrests followed complaints raised during the election exercise on Thursday, July 23,2026,after election officials reported alleged irregularities in the distribution of the funds.

According to the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) for Otuke District, Isaac Opio Opeo, election officials submitted a report indicating that some NRM leaders had distributed the money contrary to the guidelines issued by the NRM Secretariat.

Speaking to Radio Q FM,Opio Opeo said police arrested the suspects and investigations are ongoing.

He added that authorities are pursuing more individuals believed to have played a role in the alleged misuse of the funds.

Preliminary findings indicate that some beneficiaries were reportedly given only UGX 50,000 each, while other recipients allegedly received no money at all, despite the party releasing funds intended for the elections.

The suspects currently in police custody at Otuke Central Police Station include: Patrick Eyeng NRM Chairperson for Orum Sub-county,arrested with UGX 1.15 million. Benson Abuka NRM Chairperson for Alango Sub-county,arrested with UGX 16,000.

Thomas Okello,NRM Chairperson for Okwongo Town Council, arrested with UGX 1.9 million. Moses Odongo,NRM Chairperson for Adwari Sub-county. Samuel Okwir,NRM Chairperson for Okwongo Sub-county.

Jaspher Opio Dete,NRM Chairperson for Okwang Town Council, arrested with UGX 500,000. Wilson Odongo,NRM Chairperson for Okwang Sub-county.

Police say all the suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. Opio Opeo warned NRM leaders against diverting or misusing party funds, saying accountability must be upheld in line with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni's call for transparency and integrity among party officials.

The latest arrests come just a day after police in Alebtong District arrested Otiti Sam,the NRM Chairperson for Aloi Town Council, over the alleged mismanagement of UGX 14.2 million meant to facilitate the same NRM election exercise.

The North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson,SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, has since confirmed the Alebtong case, saying investigations into the alleged diversion of the party funds are ongoing.
