Lira Court Remands Man Accused of Impersonating Health Worker at Lira Regional Referral Hospital

The Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Lira has remanded a man accused of impersonating a health worker and allegedly extorting money from patients at Lira Regional Referral Hospital while promising them quick medical treatment.

The management of Lira Regional Referral Hospital arrested the suspect, identified as Moses Okello, on 26th February 2026 over allegations that he had been collecting money from patients and their attendants while falsely claiming he could help them access medical services faster.

It is alleged that Okello approached a patient’s caretaker and demanded 500,000 shillings, claiming he would ensure the patient received quick treatment. The caretaker reportedly paid 200,000 shillings as part of the requested amount.

According to reports, the victim later informed hospital security officers about the incident. The security team then alerted the police, leading to Okello’s arrest shortly afterward.

Okello appeared before the Lira Grade One Magistrate’s Court on the afternoon of 5th March 2026, presided over by Magistrate Jonathan Wamimbi. However, he denied the charges against him.

Due to the seriousness of the allegations, Magistrate Wamimbi remanded Okello to prison until 16th March 2026, when he will reappear in court.

Okello becomes the fifth person to be arrested by the hospital management over allegations of impersonating health workers and fraudulently collecting money from patients seeking medical services at Lira Regional Referral Hospital.
