Man Killed by Mob Over Alleged Goat Theft in Apac District
Apac, Uganda: Police in Apac District have launched investigations into a suspected case of mob justice that resulted in the death of a man accused of stealing a goat.
According to the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP PJ Okema, the deceased, only identified as Ogwang, was reportedly a resident of Akuli Village, Atopi Parish, Apac Sub-county.
Police say the incident occurred on June 25, 2026, at an unknown time in Ayeng Trading Centre, Ayeng Village, Ayago Parish, Apoi Sub-county, Apac District.
Preliminary reports indicate that Ogwang was allegedly attacked and killed by an angry mob over accusations of stealing a goat. His body was later discovered abandoned by the roadside with a goat tied to one of his legs.
The case was reported to police by Adoko Walter, 42, the LC1 Chairperson of Ayeng Village.
Police further revealed that the deceased had previously been arrested and rescued on several occasions by officers from Apoi Police Station and Apac Central Police Station over alleged livestock theft. According to police records, he was reportedly among individuals frequently arrested and prosecuted for animal theft-related offences. However, police emphasized that investigations into the current incident are ongoing.
A team of officers from Apac Central Police Station and Apoi Police Station visited and documented the crime scene, interviewed witnesses, and recorded statements.
The body was transported to Apac Main Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
No arrests have been made so far. Police say efforts are underway to identify the owner of the recovered goat and those responsible for the killing.
Police have continued to warn members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, urging anyone suspected of committing a crime to be handed over to law enforcement for investigation and prosecution.
