APAC DISTRICT - The Territorial Police in Apac District are investigating a case of murder by hacking following the death of Atino Margret, a 49-year-old housewife and resident of Arak Village, Akokoro Parish, Akokoroi Sub-county, Apac District.
The incident occurred on the night of 15th July 2026 at approximately 11:00 p.m. and is being investigated .
The suspect, identified as Akaki Gilbert, a 22-year-old peasant farmer and biological son of the deceased, has been arrested and is currently detained at Apac Central Police Station to assist with ongoing investigations.
Preliminary investigations indicate that on the night of the incident, the suspect returned home from Aluga Trading Centre and found his parents, Engena Robert and the deceased, together with his sister, Alobo Sandra (21), asleep in their respective houses.
It is alleged that after eating, the suspect went to his father's house demanding water. When his father advised him that it was not an appropriate time and asked him to leave, the suspect allegedly threatened to return with a panga and kill someone.
Fearing for his safety and that of the family, the father reportedly left the home to seek help from neighbours, leaving the deceased asleep in the house. Moments later, the deceased's daughter, who had heard the suspect talking to their mother, came out and found her lying in a pool of blood at the doorway with severe cut wounds.
The suspect was allegedly standing nearby holding a panga before fleeing the scene. An alarm was raised, attracting neighbours and the deceased's husband back to the homestead. A team of Police officers from Apac Central Police Station and Akokoro Sub-county Police Station, led by the Officer in Charge of Station, ASP Nkamwesiga Timothy, together with the Deputy OC CID, IP Ekwire, and Scene of Crime Officers, responded promptly to the scene.
The body of the deceased was documented, retrieved and conveyed to Apac Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.
The suspect was subsequently arrested after he was found sleeping in an abandoned grass-thatched house approximately half a kilometre from the scene. Upon arrest, he led investigators to the recovery of the panga allegedly used in the commission of the offence, which had been concealed in nearby bushes. Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect is a habitual offender with previous encounters with the law. He is also alleged to be a habitual consumer of alcohol and marijuana.
Community members stated that the deceased frequently intervened to have him released whenever he was arrested and often encouraged settlement of matters outside court.
The suspect is reported to have informed investigators that he attacked his mother because she frequently abused him and allegedly chased away his wife, leaving him without a family. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
