A 24-year-old businessman has been shot dead during an aggravated robbery attack at a shop in Awach Town Council, Gulu District, police have confirmed.

The deceased, identified as Ojok Wilfred, was reportedly attacked on the night of May 15, 2026, while selling merchandise in his father’s shop located at Paromo Village, Paduny Parish.

According to preliminary police reports, two unidentified men allegedly dressed in raincoats approached the shop at around 9:00 p.m. One of the suspects entered the shop pretending to be a customer while the other remained outside on the verandah, where he reportedly held several people who were playing cards at gunpoint.

During the incident, the suspect inside the shop reportedly jumped over the counter and attempted to grab money. However, Ojok resisted and fought back, leading to a violent altercation. In the process, the suspect outside allegedly opened fire, critically injuring the young businessman.

Ojok was rushed to Awach Health Centre IV for emergency treatment but later succumbed to the gunshot injuries.

Police officers led by the District Police Commander (DPC) responded to the scene shortly after the attack, but the assailants had already fled. The crime scene was cordoned off overnight to preserve evidence before further forensic management the following morning.

The body of the deceased was transferred to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination as investigations continue.

Speaking on the incident, Aswa West Police spokesperson ASP Ongom David Mudong condemned the attack and appealed to the public to cooperate with security agencies.

“We condemn these cowardly acts of attacking innocent and unarmed civilians. Joint security teams and intelligence components are actively following up relevant clues, and we urge members of the public to remain calm and provide any information that could help in identifying the culprits behind this heinous act,” ASP Ongom said.
