Queen Dorothy Amolo Accuses EC Witnesses of Misleading Court in Election Petition

LIRA – Independent candidate Queen Dorothy Amolo has accused witnesses from the Electoral Commission of misleading the court over circumstances surrounding the disputed Oyam South MP Election .

 Amolo made the remarks after filing an election petition at the High Court in Lira, seeking the court’s intervention over what she describes as irregularities on the ballot paper, including the use of the name “Queen Dorothy Alweny” instead of “Queen Dorothy Amolo.”

Speaking to journalists in Lango on Monday, September 21, Amolo said she had submitted her petition to the High Court in Lira with supporting evidence, including video recordings and photographs, which she says will help demonstrate what transpired during the January 15 election 2026  She said the evidence includes footage she obtained on September 19 showing individuals who allegedly appeared before the court and denied knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the election. “I have put my trust in the Electoral Commission in Oyam, but it is painful to see some of them raising the Bible before the court and telling what I consider to be falsehoods,” Amolo said.

Amolo further alleged that the Electoral Commission later distanced itself from her and claimed that she had never raised any complaint with them concerning the conduct of the election.

She said the evidence she has presented is intended to help the court establish what happened during the election and determine whether the alleged irregularities affected the contest.

 Amolo told court that she was nominated as Queen Dorothy Amolo, but the ballot paper carried the name Queen Dorothy Alweny, which she says is different from the name under which she contested. She also raised concerns over her photograph on the ballot paper. Amolo previously explained that she had changed her name from Dorothy Alweny to Queen Dorothy Amolo in 2020 and maintained that she campaigned and was nominated under her current legal name.

The January 15 2026 election was won by Patrick Ogwang Obura, who was declared elected with 29,353 votes, while Amolo received 3,516 votes, according to results declared by Oyam District Returning Officer Joseph Omona

. Amolo subsequently challenged the result in the High Court, naming Ogwang Obura, the Electoral Commission and the Oyam District Returning Officer among the respondents.

The hearing of the petition was concluded at the High Court in Lira on September 18  The court has set November 5, 2026 for delivery of judgment.

Amolo is seeking the nullification of  Patrick Ogwang Obura’s election and an order for a fresh election, arguing that the alleged ballot-paper irregularities affected her candidature. Patrick Ogwang Obura has defended his victory and, according to reports from the proceedings, his legal team has disputed the grounds of Amolo’s petition.

The court is now expected to determine the matter based on the evidence and submissions presented by the parties.
