Awei Sub County Spends UGX 8 Million to Address Desk Shortage in Schools

ALEBTON — 21/JULY 2026 Awei Sub County in Alebtong District has distributed 49 new desks to government primary schools in a bid to improve the learning environment and reduce classroom furniture shortages. 

The desks were procured using UGX 8 million allocated by the sub county in the 2025/2026 financial year. Speaking during the handover, Awei Sub County LCIII Chairperson Sam Oyena Obonyo said each desk cost UGX 170,000, including transportation. "Education remains one of the sub county's top priorities.

These desks will improve classroom conditions and enhance learning for pupils across our government primary schools," Oyena Obonyo said. He noted that while the 49 desks are not enough to meet demand, schools received between six and seven desks  each depending on their level of need.

The LCIII Chairperson pledged that the sub county will continue lobbying for more funding to ensure every school benefits. He also appealed to Alebtong District leaders and development partners for support, saying local revenue alone is insufficient to finance education and other essential services. Beyond education, Obonyo said the sub county is also prioritizing healthcare, road infrastructure, and other community development programmes. Awei Sub County Executive Committee Member Katherine Akello Owiny described the desks as a timely intervention but emphasized that more furniture is still needed. She urged school administrators and pupils to properly maintain the desks to ensure they serve learners for many years. "Investing in schools is key to improving academic performance and the future of children in Awei Sub County," Akello said.

Some of the schools that received desks include Te-Ongora Primary School, Owalo Primary School, Adayang-Lim Primary School, Ojul Primary School, and Te-Olwedo Primary School, among others across Awei Sub County.
