Speaking during a press briefing on Friday 3rd July 2026 this week, the City Education Officer Canon Jane Acio Obyen warned residents living around schools to stop selling drug substances that are damaging learners in both primary and secondary schools.

“Our children cannot learn when their minds and bodies are being destroyed by drugs. I am warning community members surrounding schools to desist from selling these harmful substances to learners. Schools must remain safe zones for education.

The officer blamed parental negligence for the rising cases, saying some parents are not taking a closer interest in monitoring their children. “Teachers are doing their part in class, but we cannot succeed alone. Some parents are negligent. Others in the community allow children to spend nights away from home instead of being in school or at home studying. That is how we spoil our learners. Canon Jane Obyen urged parents to provide guidance at home, track their children’s movement, and work closely with teachers.

She also called on community leaders to police drug sales near schools and report offenders to authorities.
