18.3km of Lira Roads Missing under Akiibua Projects

LIRA CITY 13/ July 2026 Lira City Council, together with officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport, on 13th July 2026 carried out an inspection of roads in the city amid concerns that 9 roads networks promised under the Akiibua project are not being worked on alongside the Akiibua Stadium road.
The inspection team was led by Lira City Mayor, Sam Atul.
According to the City Council, the following roads were included in the original USMID plan but have not yet commenced: 1. Ireda Shamba Road 2. Lumumba Road up to Ogengo 3. Boroboro Road 4. James Ajal Road 5. Wonyaci Road 6. Mainstream Road up to VH Public School 7. Erute Road 8. Dokolo Road 9. Moroto Road and Odokomit Road up to Lira Cathedral on Akiibua Road In total, the roads measure 18.3 kilometers.
Mayor Sam Atul said the inspection was meant to get clarity from the Ministry on why the roads were left out, yet residents were told they would be worked on together with the Akiibua Stadium road. “This will open our eyes.
If it is said that these roads are to be worked on under USMID, then it is not good to lie to people because the situation is very serious,” Atul said. He added that the exclusion has caused confusion and frustration among residents, especially in Lira City East where most of the roads are located.
Emmanuel Akeny, President of Lira City Development, said the issue has worried the community. “The people doing the Akiibua Stadium told us that these roads would also be worked on.
The City Council did not know they would be left out,” Akeny said. He appealed to the Ministry of Works to come out clearly and explain the status, saying the City does not yet have its own plan or budget to work on the 18.3km of roads.
“We do not want work on those roads to stop because the City is not yet planning to work on them. The Ministry should tell us clearly what is happening,” he added.
